Discover Das Mezzanin Restaurant & Bar Interspar

Right in the heart of Vienna’s historic first district, at Schottengasse 6-8, 1010 Wien, Austria, Das Mezzanin Restaurant & Bar Interspar feels like a surprisingly refined escape tucked inside a modern retail setting. I’ll admit, the first time I walked in, I didn’t expect much beyond a quick lunch spot. Instead, I found a polished dining room with warm lighting, attentive service, and a menu that easily rivals standalone restaurants in the city center.

The location couldn’t be more convenient. Just a short walk from Schottenring and the University of Vienna, it’s a popular choice for professionals, students, and tourists who want quality Austrian and international cuisine without the formality-or the price tag-of fine dining establishments around Stephansplatz. Over several visits, I noticed how seamlessly the restaurant balances accessibility and sophistication. You can drop in for a casual coffee or settle in for a full three-course dinner.

The menu is where things truly shine. Classic Viennese dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel are prepared with impressive attention to detail. The schnitzel arrives golden and crisp, made from tender veal, and served with a traditional potato salad lightly dressed in vinegar and oil. According to the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture, veal remains one of the most valued meats in Austrian gastronomy, and here you can taste why. The kitchen respects regional sourcing, which aligns with Austria’s strong farm-to-table culture.

On another visit, I tried their grilled salmon with seasonal vegetables. The fish was perfectly cooked-flaky yet moist-and plated with colorful produce that reflected the time of year. This focus on seasonality isn’t accidental. Research from the European Food Information Council highlights that seasonal ingredients often retain more nutrients and flavor due to shorter storage and transport times. You can genuinely taste that freshness in every bite.

The bar area deserves special mention. Vienna has a long-standing coffeehouse tradition, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, and Das Mezzanin carries that spirit forward. Whether you order a classic Melange or opt for a glass of Austrian Grüner Veltliner, the staff handles each drink with care. I once asked the bartender about local wine regions, and he walked me through the differences between Wachau and Burgenland varieties with the confidence of a sommelier. That kind of knowledgeable service adds real value to the experience.

Reviews from regular guests often praise the balance between price and quality. Compared to other central Vienna locations, portions here are generous without sacrificing presentation. During a weekday lunch, I observed a steady flow of business diners choosing the daily specials. The process is smooth: you order at the counter, receive a buzzer, and your meal arrives promptly at your table. For anyone with a tight schedule, that efficiency matters.

Cleanliness and transparency also stand out. Food labeling and allergen information are clearly displayed, in line with European Union regulations on consumer information. As someone who occasionally dines with friends who have dietary restrictions, I appreciate how easy it is to identify vegetarian or gluten-free options. While the menu leans heavily toward Austrian cuisine, there are lighter salads, pasta dishes, and international plates for those seeking variety.

What makes this restaurant memorable, though, isn’t just the food or the central location. It’s the consistent reliability. I’ve visited during busy holiday weekends and quiet weekday afternoons, and the service standard remains steady. The staff greets guests warmly, tables are cleared quickly, and orders are handled accurately. In an industry where inconsistency can damage trust, that reliability builds confidence.

Of course, it’s worth noting that because the restaurant is integrated into a commercial building, the ambiance differs from a standalone historic Gasthaus. If you’re looking for candlelit romance, you might prefer a traditional tavern elsewhere in Vienna. But if you want well-prepared Austrian classics, a diverse drinks selection, and a practical central address, this spot delivers exactly what it promises.

For anyone exploring Vienna and scanning through restaurant reviews for dependable dining options near Schottengasse, Das Mezzanin Restaurant & Bar Interspar stands out as a place where quality ingredients, knowledgeable staff, and thoughtful preparation come together naturally on one menu.

  • I liked it a lot! It does not have historic vibe as it has really modern interior but food and service is near top level for middle class people where i belong. I took a bigger portion of dumplings from starters and it kept me full for the entire day. My fiance was also very satisfied with his chicken salad.

  • 2nd time we came since 2024, this time for the brunch. A very nice place in a crazy old bank room

  • We had a wonderful culinary experience at Das Mezzanin in Interspar am Schottentor. The Wienerschnitzel was very delicious and the Sirloin stake was soft and tasty. In fact it was so good that we wanted to order more. With that we had a beef soup with pancake like pasta (it isn't actually pasta) which goes without saying was also as good as the main course, as was the salad. Sweet and delicious, perfect for complimenting the steak. The Restaurant itself is connected to the supermarket so if one wants one can go take a look inside the supermarket which is probably among the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful in Europe. We had a wonderful experience with the staff, especially with server which served us who was very friendly and helpful with recommending the meals. All compliments to her and of course all other staff and the chef. Definetley would like (and most probably will) return to this amazing Restaurant with tasty food and very friendly staff. If you're looking for a fine dining experience in Vienna, look No further, this is the right place.

  • This place was perfect. It’s not too busy, they serve quickly and the waiters are really nice and friendly. The food was perfect. The menu is not very extensive, but it’s all you need after some wandering on the Christmas market. Perfect Viennese food.

  • One of the best things about this place is that you can get a cold tap water which is better than any bottled water. The dishes are good size and you get value for your money. The restaurant is well air conditioned and the place is well designed and decorated. Definitely worth visiting.

  • I am always positively surprised when I come here. The service is always very friendly as well as incredibly professional and attentive. They serve both Austrian classics (like the favorite Grießnockerlsuppe) and dishes with a more modern and seasonal twist. The Beef tartar is a big hit but they also serve delicious vegetarian meals, there is something for everybody! Although it is not exactly cheap, it is very much worth the price. Big fan, both of concept and execution.

  • Located in the same building as a very fancy Spar supermarket. We were having dinner around 17:00, so a bit early, and even though we reserved, there was still plenty of space. Everything was great, I particularly enjoyed the homemade lemonade and the potatoes with the Wiener Schnitzel. The service was friendly and fast.
